What to Wear: Colors

One of my biggest pieces of advice is to choose soft colors, especially if you are going for fine art vibes. When it comes to colors, the goal is to complement each other. There are several colors I tend to recommend to clients such as dusty blue, light pink, off white, and light neutral colors.

Why these specific colors? First, these colors and shades do not create a color cast back onto your skin. If you want a lime green shirt, that color will reflect back onto you. If you want to wear bright red, that color is going to reflect back onto your skin! Second, my brand style is very soft, whimsical, yet minimal. The above colors emulate my brand and editing style and can often give my photos that timeless look. And third, these colors don’t take away the importance of the subject, which is YOU! Colors and clothes should be a part of who you are, but shouldn’t steal the show away from you.

There are only a few colors I usually ask clients to try to stay away from. These include any super bright or neon colors and most oranges, reds, and yellows. There are two exceptions to these types of colors. First, these colors would be okay if a clothing item has a pattern with a bit of that color. Second, if these colors are more muted and leaning towards rusty oranges, yellows, and red. The outfit idea below is the perfect example! This family really wanted some reds, yellows, and greens for their family photos. I was able to find a dress that had some of these colors on a more muted level.
