Not sure what to wear? Learn a few of my tips and tricks on how to choose fine art outfit options for your family photo session.
Colors, patterns, prints, style; there are so many things to consider when choosing outfits for your family and it can be overwhelming to say the least! Not only do you need to choose your own outfit, but you need to find something that works for the rest of your family members. Where do you even start?
That’s where I come in! As an official Annie Wells Photography client, you’ll have access to my Session Guide which reviews how to achieve the fine art clothing aesthetic. Not only do I review colors, patterns, prints, and styles but I discuss my favorite places to shop AND I provide several example outfit options with links for your to purchase.
Here’s a sneak peek into how I have my clients choose the right colors for family photos.
One of my biggest pieces of advice is to choose soft colors, especially if you are going for fine art vibes. When it comes to colors, the goal is to complement each other. There are several colors I tend to recommend to clients such as dusty blue, light pink, off white, and light neutral colors.
Why these specific colors? First, these colors and shades do not create a color cast back onto your skin. If you want a lime green shirt, that color will reflect back onto you. If you want to wear bright red, that color is going to reflect back onto your skin! Second, my brand style is very soft, whimsical, yet minimal. The above colors emulate my brand and editing style and can often give my photos that timeless look. And third, these colors don’t take away the importance of the subject, which is YOU! Colors and clothes should be a part of who you are, but shouldn’t steal the show away from you.
There are only a few colors I usually ask clients to try to stay away from. These include any super bright or neon colors and most oranges, reds, and yellows. There are two exceptions to these types of colors. First, these colors would be okay if a clothing item has a pattern with a bit of that color. Second, if these colors are more muted and leaning towards rusty oranges, yellows, and red. The outfit idea below is the perfect example! This family really wanted some reds, yellows, and greens for their family photos. I was able to find a dress that had some of these colors on a more muted level.
Choosing what to wear to family photos can be a job within itself. After reading through my Session Guide and still feeling unsure of what to choose for your family, feel free to reach out to me and I can curate your outfit for you!

On the most beautiful summer day, I had the honor of taking photos of the sweetest little newborn and her family near Stillwater, Minnesota.
There is nothing like adding a new addition to your family. Ali and Luke welcomed their sweet newborn baby, Margot, in June and officially became a family of four.
Before our session, I reached out to Ali asking what she envisioned for her family. For any session, I will always send you a Session Guide which goes through how to prepare for your photos and how to choose clothing items. I also offer my clients three curated outfit ideas designed for their family! This ensures that the outfits will fit my brand and style. It also takes out the added headache of trying to find dreamy outfits on your own.
After chatting back and forth, I sent Ali three options based on her preferences. From there, Ali went with the second option, choosing a dress from Worth Collective (find it here!) and an outfit from Zara Baby for their newborn. Luke already had a pair of khaki pants and a light blue shirt. Alice, their toddler daughter, had an eyelet blue dress that still fit her well. A few weeks later, the family arrived at our session and looked absolutely amazing! Their outfits truly came together and created cohesiveness without being too matchy-matchy.
Finally, their session had arrived! Alice was all smiles. She explored, played with flowers, and loved on her newborn sister. Ali and Luke took turns chasing her around as the other parent held tight onto Margot. They had only been a family of four for a couple of weeks but it was like they were always meant to be. It was magical to see and I felt honored to be apart of this milestone.
